Coal Belt Decals is proud to introduce our newest product line of scale size coal products. This material is actually coal slag used in the sandblasting industry, but it's size, color, and 'brilliance' lends itself to our use quite well. We offer two sizes, one similar to "block" or "lump" size coal, generally used in hoppers and gons during the steam era, and one more "stoker" or "flood loader" size, more commonly seen in unit trains or even single-car shipments on the rails today.
Available in one pound bags, this coal is less than 2 inches in HO scale, and is identified as 30-60 grit by the manufacturer. This coal is appropriate for modern unit train cars, from the 1960's to the present, as well as for any N gauge cars. This size would look rather well inside a dump truck, or as a scenery item next to a house or around a tipple.
Here at Coal Belt Decals, we have been making coal loads for all our hopper cars. We have generated a table showing the inside dimensions of some of the more popular HO scale hoppers for your convenience. At the current time, we do not have any information for the other scales (we are biased around here, ya'know...), but if you have any information that would be appropriate, please feel free to submit it and we will add it to the table.
Custom built coal loads are available upon request, though this is not offered as a standard product line at this time. Our loads are constructed in a method learned from one of our customers/helpers, Anthony. We use a base cut from either balsa wood or foam core board, with the coal glued to the top of the base, piled in an appropriate manner for the car (flood loaded style, older tipple loaded style, etc).
Larger quantities of both sizes are available upon request, as well as an MSDS and information about the manufacturer. Please email us with any questions or comments.
